What is an automatic home standby generator?
An automatic home standby generator monitors the utility power coming into your house. When there is an outage, the generator automatically turns itself on and provides power to pre-specified areas of your house. When the utility power is restored, the generator switches your house back to utility and turns the generator off.
This type of reliable back up power is convenient because you never have to go outside to turn on the generator as you would a portable unit and you don't have to be at home for it to work. It also runs off the existing propane or natural gas you have at your house.
What are the basic components of a Home Standby Generator?
A Home Standby Generator system will include a generator (genset) and an automatic transfer switch. Both are needed for the generator to work. The automatic transfer switch determines when to turn on the generator and switches power between utility and generator during a power outage.

* The KOHLER 12 kW generator is the only generator in its class powerful enough to start and run a typical 4-ton (48,000 BTU) central air conditioner in the event of a power outage. Until now, a 17 kW or larger generator was required to run central air along with all other major appliances.
